Ask An Expert: Petros Zourdoumis

Petros Zourdoumis, Director of ADR point and ODReurope, talks about conflict in the refugee context, access to justice issues, and the potential role of tech and ODR in providing solutions.

Why is resolving conflict in the refugee context so important?

It is important for two main reasons. A practical one, which has to do with the operation of the refugee camp and the need to keep tensions and misunderstandings to the absolute minimum. And a substantive one, which has to do with the right of the refugees to have access to dispute resolution, which is not easy if we take into consideration the conditions they live in, the fact that they are on the move and also the fact that refugees almost in their entirety will not be willing to use courts for anything that might impair their chances of being relocated to another country.

Consumer Redress: A Changing Tide?

Consumer Redress: A Changing Tide?

The various challenges in trying to provide effective redress to consumers have created momentum behind an effort to change the way we think about consumer protection. The old zero-sum debate between consumer advocates (presumed to be in collaboration with the class action bar) and the big legal defence firms (presumed to be doing the bidding of big corporations) has achieved little in terms of progress over the past few decades.

Ask An Expert: Mirèze Philippe

Mirèze Philippe, Special Counsel at the Secretariat of ICC the International Court of Arbitration in Paris, speaks about the key themes of the upcoming Paris GPC event, including the needs of users, diversity in practice and the future of dispute resolution.

Why did you specialise in dispute resolution?

I landed in arbitration without having specifically sought this specialisation. My generation of lawyers was not trained in arbitration because no specific training or LLMs existed in the 1980s and we learned arbitration by practicing it. I started in 1984 at the International Chamber of Commerce in the German team administering arbitration cases because I speak German, and since then I have been building my experience in dispute resolution. The area I have been focusing on since 2000 is online dispute resolution which is fascinating as it offers many facilities of access to justice and is truly the future of dispute resolution.
